Following the completion of our pilot phase for Turnitin’s AI writing detection tool, we are pleased to announce that we will be renewing the tool for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Throughout the Spring 2026 semester, the DLS team held 13 workshops that discussed the tool's capabilities and carefully evaluated its impact and overall accuracy. I appreciate the feedback provided by participants, which was instrumental in making this decision.
Why We Are Keeping the Tool
The decision to transition from a pilot to an available resource is based on:
Enhanced Visibility: Providing instructors with additional data to identify potential generative AI use in written assignments.
Support for Academic Integrity: Maintaining a proactive approach as generative AI becomes increasingly pervasive in student work.
Integration: The seamless inclusion of AI detection within our existing Turnitin Similarity Reports, minimizing uploads of student work to unvetted sites.
Best Practices for Continued Use
As we move into the next year, we want to reiterate several key principles discussed during the pilot:
A Starting Point, Not a Final Verdict: The AI percentage is an indicator that warrants further review, not definitive proof of academic misconduct.
Subject Matter Expertise: Instructors should continue to use their subject matter expertise, considering a student’s previous work and the context of the assignment.
Formative Conversations: We encourage the use of these reports as prompts for constructive dialogue with students about their writing process.
